To forgive an unrepentant wrongdoer gives the impression that the victim condones the crime, that he condones injustice, thereby making him nearly as unrighteous as the wrongdoer. Thus, I believe it quite reasonable that the Baptist should preach “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (Mk 1:4; Lk 3:3), and that the Risen Christ should declare that “repentance and forgiveness of sins in his name will be preached to all the nations” (Lk 24:47). Lovely. Brings back happy memories of the Ascetical Theology in Late Antiquity seminar I had with Roberta Bondi in 1982 and the books on prayer she wrote later. Thanks for helpful words.
